Wow!...I'm floored. More info on your Mellencamp response please. He is not who I had in mind, but your answer prompted me to think of another person who fit the cateogy; Bob Dylan for "Renaldo and Clara."

Here's a hint regarding the other person I had in mind: He was a Hollywood legend, and two of his lesser career accomplishments included directing Marlon Brando and writing a song which Petula Clark made a hit. Good luck!

John Mellencamp made "Fallen from Grace"in which he starred and directed.I guessed he did the music(hence the ?)I think it was made for TV.It was on recently, but I've never seen it.
Charlie Chaplin wrote a song that Petula Clark sang.Didn't know he directed Marlon, but it sounds like him.

Charlie Chaplin came out of retirement in the mid 60's to direct the film "A Countess From Hong Kong" which starred Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren. The theme song from the movie was "This Is My Song" which became a big hit for Petula Clark. Chaplin wrote both the words and music.

Chaplin directed, starred in, and wrote the theme music for "Limelight". Lyrics were added by other writers, and became the standard, "Eternally."

Scored the movies, City Lights, Gold Rush, Great Dictator, The Kid, and Modern Times.

The standard "Smile" (heard every year on the Jerry Lewis telethon) is also a Chaplin composition.

A true Renaissance man.
