- Chevy Chase hosted the Academy Awards where "The Last Emporer" won the prize for Best Picture.
- On his own televangelism program being taped in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jimmy Swaggart confesses that he is guilty of an unspecified sin and will be temporarily leaving the pulpit.
- Former pop singer Sonny Bono is elected mayor of Palm Springs, California.

1986 is inncorrect.
I'm thinking these events were a while ago, but not quite as long ago as they seem to be, if you follow me. So I'll guess 1992.

do we get more than one guess? I think it was in the 80's because Chevy was big.And since elections are every 2 years that why I guessed 86. Sonny Bono was mayor then a congressman at least a couple of terms&he died in the 90's.Any ideas anybody?
You're right that I should have gone with my first instinct, which was only one year off. Rob and I are both out of the game this question because he looked up the answer after I told him what I had posted.

Marty, the year that first popped into my head (not the one I posted) was one year off.
