Who am I?

"Who am I" is always a fun way to ask a trivia question. Usually you give three clues, like I was born in such-and-such, and I said this-and-that, etc. You can do the same thing for years, like one of those magazine shows does. You know, "the following 3 things happened in what year?" Here's mine, then you think of one.

I was the General of the Army, Secretary of State and Time's Man of the Year in 1948. Who am I?

Arguably the most influential American during the last 50 years of the 20th Century. Should be a household name, but I'd bet that less than 5% of current high school or college students would recognize his name. (Unless they live in Western Europe.)

I think Harry Truman may have been Man of the Year because of the unexpected win over Dewey(thanks,Rob,your comment was a hint),but the other two things are a mystery. Is Commander in Chief the same as General of the Army?

Truman is incorrect as he was the President that appointed our mystery man to Secretary of State.

Am I missing something? (Hope I'm not embarrassing my husband...) Eisenhower, right?

I gave up and looked up Man of Year and it shows Harry Truman in 1948.There is another man on the list that fills at least one other position. The "plan" is not to say more for those who want to keep guessing.
With Rob's comment about Western Europe,I was thinking of the Berlin Airlift. Not sure what year that was.

Eisenhower is nobody without this man.

Rob came home early (dentist appointment), so I asked him, and he told me, and then I slapped my forehead. Excuse me, I have to go study now...
